Histones are proteins that package DNA into nucleosomes. H2A consists of a main globular domain and a long N-terminal tail or C-terminal on one end of the molecule. The N-terminal tail or C-terminal tail is the location of post-translational modification. H2A is important for packaging DNA into chromatin.
