Gamma-enolase, also known as enolase 2 (ENO2)   or neuron specific enolase (NSE), is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by   the ENO2 gene.This isoenzyme, a homodimer, is found in mature neurons and   cells of neuronal origin. Due to this organ-specificity, concentrations of   NSE in serum or, more commonly, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), are often elevated   in diseases of a variety of neuron-destructive and neurodegenerative   disorders. NSE might also have utility as a prognostic marker in neuronal   injury.
