Background：

Cystatin   C is a low molecular weight (13kD) cysteine proteinase inhibitor which is   produced by all nucleated cells at a constant rate, freely filtered by the   renal glomeruli, and catabolized in the tubuli.   Under normal conditions, cystatin C does   not enter the final excreted urine to any significant degree and the plasma   level keeps constant. But in patients with kidney dysfunction, both urine and   plasma cystatin C   level   may increase   to be measured. Thus   Cystatin C may be used as an alternative to   creatinine and creatinine clearance to screen for and monitor kidney   dysfunction .
